Course Details
This is a discussion based training course that will see your trainer talking to participants about the hazards associated with the operation of overhead cranes.
Our Goals are to ensure that crane operators:
- Understand their legal responsibilities for operating cranes and hoists.
- Understand their legal responsibilities for slinging/rigging loads safely.
- Understand the best practices and procedures from experienced, competent persons.
- Gain practical knowledge to help avoid potential safety problems.
- Gain knowledge of legal liabilities for contravening regulations.
Course Details
Overhead crane operations present significant workplace hazards when not performed safely. Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that employers ensure crane operators are properly trained and competent. This comprehensive training program equips your team with the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate overhead cranes safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
The 8-hour course combines classroom instruction with hands-on practical evaluation, ensuring participants understand both the theory and application of safe crane operation. Your team will learn to recognize hazards, conduct proper equipment inspections, understand load capacity ratings, use correct rigging techniques, and communicate effectively using standard hand signals.
Note: Participants must wear appropriate footwear and PPE for practical components.
For this course, we conduct the training at your facility to ensure participants receive instruction on the specific overhead crane equipment they’ll be operating. On-site training saves travel costs and allows for customized instruction that addresses your workplace’s unique operational considerations and hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should enroll in overhead crane training?
Overhead crane training is essential for anyone who operates, works with, or works near overhead cranes in the workplace. This includes crane operators, riggers and slingers, maintenance personnel, supervisors overseeing crane operations, and workers who perform tasks in areas where overhead cranes are used. Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to ensure that workers operating overhead cranes are trained and competent. Even workers who don’t operate cranes but work in proximity to them benefit from understanding crane safety protocols, hand signals, and pedestrian safety procedures.
How long does overhead crane certification take?
ACUTE’s overhead crane training program is completed in one full day (8 hours). The course is structured into two main components: classroom theory and hands-on practical evaluation. During the theoretical portion, you’ll learn about legislation, hazard awareness, equipment design principles, inspections, rigging hardware, and capacity ratings. The practical component provides hands-on experience with equipment operation, safe hoisting techniques, and proper hand signal communication. Upon successful completion of both components, participants receive their overhead crane operator certification.
Is overhead crane training conducted at my workplace?
Yes, we conduct all overhead crane training on-site at your facility. This approach ensures your operators receive training on the actual crane equipment they’ll be using in their day-to-day work. On-site training allows our instructors to address the specific hazards, load types, and operational considerations unique to your workplace environment. Our experienced instructors bring all necessary training materials and adapt the program to your facility’s requirements.
